Default Combat computer noise

Computer noise is typicall generated from three sources. The hard drive in your PC spins at a constant rate, and sometimes emits a high-pitched noise. The fan in your power supply also spins constantly, and some fans can be uncomfortably loud. Finally, any fan(s) on your video card probably emit very annoying noise, since these fans typically are small and must spin at a high rate to do any good.

You can aim for a quieter PC by preferring video cards without on-board fans and hard drives with low decibel-level ratings. Look for power supplies, too, with low decibel ratings.

Default

Two of my computers are quiet as all heck. I have to look at the lights to see if they are running.

1 has 4hdd's, cpu fan, power supply and video card fans. My other, home-built machine runs 3 120mm case fans, currently only 2hdd's, power supply, cpu and video fans.

I couldn't believe how quiet they run, compared to my older computers, they sounded like a deuce-and-a-half, running in first gear.

(edit)
When I built my big-gun, with the i7 cpu, I purposely used quiet components, as JD stated in the OP. These parts didn't really raise the project budget at all.
