Default Outlook slow to start

Is your Outlook or e-mail program slow to start up or sluggish in operation? Many performance problems can be solved by cleaning out your inbox. Move messages from your inbox into separate folders that you create, or delete unwanted messages entirely. Keeping the mail in your inbox down to one day's worth will have a positive effect on how quickly your e-mail program responds.

I was going to suggest using Thunderbird instead of Outlook (Express) but your suggestion holds true with pretty much any e-mail client. Keeping it clean is a must.

Jon.

Good suggestion.

The larger the outlook mail file (the PST, your Personal Folders) becomes the slower outlook performs.

Other steps you can take to reduce the file size and speed up Outlook are:
  1. Clear out the Deleted Items folder (available option in the Tools menu)
  2. Autoarchive old mail messages
  3. Store mail messages in separate mail (PST) files

To archive messages into a separate file:
  • Select File | Data File Management...
  • Click Add...
  • Select Outlook Personal Folders File (.pst)
  • Click OK
  • Enter the file name for the new archive
  • Enter the archive PST file's name afer Name:
  • Enter a password if you wish to secure the file
  • Click OK

You can drag and drop entire folders from your primary mail file to the new archive that you created under Mail Folders

To move all messages that are older than a certain date (for example all messages received before January 1, 2010) to the archive:
  • Select File | Archive
  • Click on the desired folder
  • at Archive items older than: enter the date 1/1/2010
  • Browse to the PST file you wish to archive the messages into
  • Click OK.
