Is anyone using Ubuntu on a notebook computer? Is it faster than Windows? How about driver support? The good thing about Win7 is it has drivers for everything.

I'm not sure about Umuntu on a laptop but your second statement is way off. I have to have "dual-boot" on my PC both Win 7 and XP Pro just to be able to use one printer, one scanner, webcam etc. because there are NO Win 7 drivers available. Also Adobe has no "flash" for 64 bit Win 7 in the MSN web page.. Win 7 has been out quit a while now but many 3rd party companies have not produced drivers yet

We have Ubuntu running on several notebooks at the store and here at home. It runs nice and fast. We have seen some wireless trouble on a certain model of the HP notebooks but other than that everything works perfectly and at much higher speeds than Windows. We have more trouble with drivers in Windows than Linux too.
Edit: Jim, you can download the Ubuntu ISO image and burn it to a CD. Then boot your notebook from the CD and click on the Try It option when it starts up. You'll get a good idea of what your machine will do from the live demo. The only thing it really lacks is speed. Running from the CD is much slower than having it installed on the computer. Jon. |

Using Ubuntu on a 5 year old HP Pavilion laptop. It's not only faster but more stable and easier to maintain. The speed increase was the most dramatic change. I still have Windows installed and have to occasionally boot into it, but I will put that off until I absolutely have to. It's just too slow.

I downloaded Ubunto and put it onto a CD. A friend had a hard drive failure on a Dell laptop. Using Ubunto as a temporary operating system I was able to snatch all of her files, before replacing the hard drive.
This was maybe a baby step for you guys, but for an amateur who is not really even interested in computers other than as a user, I was pretty excited. This doesn't address the OP's thoughts, but I had to tell someone! |
