I use SME Server 7.4.0 (based on centos n.nn) to run an internet gateway.
You just need an old machine with 40+gb hard drive and two network cards.
I have my own domain name and can issue email addresses to the rest of the family.
SME Server will collect and distrubute email on your local network. It acn act as a file server and an internet filter.
Its security is very good.
