Default Has Apple deliberately crippled the iPad?

I don't see the iPad as just another eReader, but as a device with a lot of potential utility that has been hopelessly crippled by efforts to limit its penetration into Apple's notebook market on one end and its iPhone market on the other. Conceptually the iPad, which is a devise designed to have OS functionality built by 3rd party developers thus freeing Apple from those costs, suffers from Apple's highly limiting developer restrictions such as its rules against Adobe's Flash.

Not sure I see it that way. I think the iPad is a trendsetting iteration of a device that will find its way into all of our tool chests. In other words, I see it as a prototype. Ereading is the future. i have no doubt about that. We're just moving toward a platform that makes sense, as technology allows. Right now I'm sitting here typing this into a notebook computer. I'm not sure an iPad wouldn't make more sense.

The iPad keyboard would convince you that you made the right choice as to the device to use for typing at least for the time being at any rate. I agree with your assessment of the future in terms of eReading, although I see eReading in a much broader sense than is the common usage today. The point I was trying to make is that Apple appears to be short sighted in terms of what their current policies. The large screen, more suitable for reading and info display coupled with relatively low cost 3rd party apps, seems to be a natural for today's world and it looks like Jobs is making the same mistake he made 30 years ago when he imposed too many restrictions on the directions of system growth. The growth is inevitable whether on the apple platform or someone else's.

Question

When I first heard about iPad, I wanted to get one right away - but when I found it didn't have any slots for things like SD cards or whatnot, I was disappointed. What I would really like is if iPad would let me put my text files and Jpegs directly onto it without having to go through some online rigamarole. I understand that one of the new Androids will indeed have an SD slot. The original Kindle had one I believe, but the 2d generation Kindle did not. I like hi-tech gadgets but am wary of those that require continuing expenditures just to make use of them.

In general, when I go online, I cut and paste copies of many text articles I come across, onto my HDD with the intention of reading them later, when seated comfortably in my recliner. I want something I could readily copy text files into and read like a book there. I also want to show people Jpeg pictures I've taken. I can easily convert text articles to my old TRGpro PDA, but that is 9 years old, can't be replaced and I'd like something newer, with a large color screen.

Good input that I think makes sense. For the time being the iPad, from Apples perspective, needs to make back its development costs and have minimal impact of the profitability of its other product lines. That means the greater dependence the system has on other elements of its product line the better. I think the issue is how long can Apple afford to maintain this posture.

Just ran across an interesting article on CNET, on sort of the same subject:

"Intel should break the mold and go whole hog with its own design and end product--at least for a tablet. And the operating system of choice already exists: Android.

Though Intel executives are ostensibly correct when they say (most recently in the earnings conference call Tuesday) that tablets are simply "additive" to the market and overall not that significant yet, the question is, will Intel keep saying this while slowly consigning itself to insignificance in some of the most interesting newfangled device markets?"

I can't remember a time when some hi-tech company ever asked me what I might want in a device. It seems to be that they just come up with something, and market that. Years ago, when there was a much greater variety of companies out there, it was fascinating to see all the new gadgets that kept coming out. Now it seems comparatively dull. And it was more fun when there were all those varieties of computer operating systems to choose from.
