I have several very long MP3 files on CD's of lectures which I had permission to tape. My problem is that I would like to separate the files into shorter segments so that when I stop listening to the lecture, I don't have to start again at the beginning.
Is there a way to accomplish this? I play my files on an 8 GB Samsung MP-3 player but would invest in another unit if it would help. __________________

I use Audacity, and that is also the program that the Ion USB Turntable used to use to split LP records. There is also this download from Ion of software to do that.
You can do it manually using Audacity, and try that Ion software.

Audacity is indeed a good application. Any audio editor should handle this chore, though. For more power than Audacity, try Audition.

Thanks Jay, Audition is certainly a powerful one! If my wife starts recording again (she sings and plays piano) I may give that a try.

I have used Audacity but from what I know about it, I think an mp3 file would have to be reconverted back to aup files, split, then converted back, and some sound quality loss would probably occur. I do know there are direct mp3 file splitters out there, too. Also, the CC Witnesses I have will split existing mp3 files into separate files without converting back to another file type. Some of my Audacity generated mp3's have developed file errors and I can't use them - not sure if it's Audacity at fault, or a bad external drive I put the files on.

I use a shareware program called "total recorder". With this program you can divide any recording into seperate tracks. I think the "pro" edition cost about $30.00. It also can digitally record anything that goes through your sound card and can convert to several different formats.

It is quite exciting to learn that the splitting can be done. I will be researching the various procedures and programs you so generously helped with.
