Tom Tom is my favorite. Whichever one you get, you want one with lifetime Map updates. Look for a unit that has lane assistance and traffic capability.

Thanks. I had heard that these devices did not require any kind of subscription, but I guess there would have to be some way to get updates. These aren't free?

Garmin, Nuvi 255 and a handheld CXs for geocaching. Reasonably priced, easy to use, and most of all, dependable. And, yes, I have used other brands to compare. Some units will push their route if you deviate, rather than recalculating immediately.

We use a Delorme system on our laptop for travel and the maps with directions on my G1 droid.
I like the laptop option as I can see where we're going, where we've been, make notes about certain locations and many other options that are perfect for our photo outings. That system is not so good for just a driver but excellent with two and I am The Navigator. |

My AUdi Q5 has built-in GPS.
In the other car I use a Magellan Maestro 4700. It's always given good directions, has lots of useful Points of Interest with the AAA affiliation, and the Bluetooth connection to cell phones to use it for hands free calling is really nice.

I bought a fairly expensive Nokia Cellphone with a 8 MP camera that records the GPS data on my photo's and well as simply working as a hand held GPS unit. I needed to record some photo's of property boundries with the GPS locations on them for documentary purposes. Like a quick and cheap survey of the property to make sure we didn't build part of our plant off the property...surveys and records in Colombia are rather dubious and vague.
I needed a hand held unit because the ranch perimeter is about 160 miles and a lot is impassable by vehicle.
