Those devices were all modern apparatus. I used a Freiden Rotary Calculator with a ball stricker like an old IBM typewriter for 4 years to adjust the gas mixture daily for an entire town. We then bought a Hewlett Packard 4 function computer with a plotter for $65,000. A $2.00 pocket calculator today has more power, makes you wonder what the next 10 years will bring?

That reminds me - if we wanted to save our own copy of a program written on the old teletypes, we could run a paper tape listing - you'd get a roll of yellow paper tape with a bunch of holes in it, and save that and if your program went missing on the mainframe, you could just run that tape through and in a few minutes, have your program back online. I think I still have some of those old tapes! Makes me laugh just thinking we had to put up with that! But at the time, it was amazing technology to me.

I have been prone to simply buying off the shelf for a while, because it seemed that I could buy one cheaper than I could build one. However, my last build, I wanted something snappy for photography and videography uses. I went with an ASUS board, Pentium i7 cpu, 16mb of DDr3 ram and 4 1tb hdd's, 1 320gb drive for the OS, everything running sata. Then I stuffed it all in a full size tower case so I could make changes without a hassel, and expansion possibilities are enormous.

I'm happy.

There is a small shop locally that will build computers, and also are knowledgeable in Linux. I'm going to look at your specs, Harryset, and discuss it with them. I also want that expansion capability and lots of spare HDD room. Thank you very much for your feedback.
