I can burn a CD, I can play music MP3's from a CD. But for some reason, "all of a sudden" (meaning it has been some time since I tried to look at files on a CD) nothing.
When I load a CD into the drive, it "Autoplays", and the Window pops up, but when I click on "Open Folder to view files..." the Window closes and nothing happens. If it is a CD with MP3s on it, and I click "Play with Windows Media Player", the files will play and can be seen in WMP, but I still cannot see the files on the CD. Something I have installed or perhaps even a Windows Update could be the culprit, but I'm just going blank on what settings or Registry entry I can change. The CDs are readable on my other computer, so it is not the CD at fault. Any ideas? The following are screenshots showing what I get. ![]()

happens if you right click on the cd drive and then left click on open. If the box in your second image appears close it out first.

Makes no difference what I do. I don't need to use the Autoplay.
If I right-click and then choose Explore, I get the a Window showing the Desktop. If I (left) double-click nothing happens.

Go into the device manager, CD/DVD and set up the parameters such as drive no. etc.

If I Change the Drive Letter to "M", I can then read/access the contents of the CD.
I tried changing it back to "D" and it still can't read it. So the problem is likely a Registry issue. I tried Deleting "D", and then Re-Added it, but still not usable. I can use "M" for now, but I may run into some problems with installed programs, etc.

I found the solution!
First went to Task manager and I stopped Explorer.exe. Then using CMD via Task Managers File-New Task-CMD-RUN I opened a DOS Command Prompt, changed to C:/ by typing cd\ and then typed del c:\autorun.* /f /s /q /a and hit Enter. That deleted the autorun file(s). Then I restarted Explorer.exe, and checked the D Drive and everything works as it should. The problem was caused by an infection that was caught and cleaned by anti-virus program, and is a common side-effect.

Interesting thread. Thanks for posting the solution. Amazing that sometimes viruses are the last thing we think about when problems arise.
Which virus scanner are you using? |
